Go Green! Tanamakoon and the Environment
Are you passionate about preserving the environment? Let your actions speak louder than words!
In the heart of Algonquin Provincial Park, where nature’s beauty is at its most vibrant, some businesses are setting the standard for eco-conscious practices. Among them are Camp Tanamakoon and Bartlett Lodge, owned by Kim and Marilyn Smith, who have made it their mission to prioritize environmental sustainability in every aspect of their operations.
Leading by Example: Since acquiring Camp Tanamakoon in 1984 and Bartlett Lodge in 1996, the Smiths have been on a relentless journey to minimize their businesses’ environmental footprint. From innovative waste management solutions to embracing renewable energy sources, their initiatives are driving real change.
Innovative Waste Management: At Camp Tanamakoon, large composting toilets were introduced in 1986, serving as a sustainable waste disposal solution for the camp’s population. Similarly, Bartlett Lodge adopted a unique septic system utilizing live peat moss filters and aeration to purify waste, setting a new standard for remote locations.
Embracing Renewable Energy: The Smiths are pioneers in embracing renewable energy sources. Both Camp Tanamakoon and Bartlett Lodge are powered by solar panels, reducing their reliance on traditional energy grids. Additionally, they have partnered with Bullfrog Power, ensuring their electricity comes from certified low-impact hydroelectric and wind sources.
A Commitment to Innovation: The Smiths’ dedication to environmental sustainability extends to their accommodations. Cabins like Sunrise at Bartlett Lodge are fully powered by solar energy and equipped with eco-friendly amenities, offering guests a guilt-free retreat amidst nature.
Promoting Water Conservation: Water conservation is a top priority for the Smiths, given their locations’ reliance on water access. State-of-the-art solar thermal equipment preheats water for kitchen use, while low-flow showerheads help minimize water consumption in showers.
Clean Transportation Solutions: In a bid to reduce emissions, Bartlett Lodge has transitioned to electric water taxis, powered by rechargeable batteries, offering guests a serene and eco-friendly journey across the lake.
Continuous Improvement: The Smiths remain committed to ongoing sustainability efforts, continuously seeking new ways to reduce their businesses’ environmental impact and raise awareness about the importance of conservation.
Join us in supporting these eco-warriors as they pave the way for a greener future in Algonquin Park and beyond. Together, we can make a difference for our planet.
